| چکیده | ||

| چکیده [English] | ||
| Extended Abstract The Influence of Bilingualism and Gender on the Acquisition of Substitution as a Cohesive Device in English Introduction: In the contemporary landscape of linguistic research, the cognitive and metalinguistic advantages of bilingualism have become a focal point of investigation. This study explores the potential facilitative effects of bilingualism—specifically among Arabic–Persian bilinguals—on the acquisition of discourse-level competence in English, with a particular emphasis on the cohesive device of “substitution.” Grounded in the Interdependence Hypothesis (Cummins, 2000) and the notion of metalinguistic awareness, the research examines whether bilingual learners demonstrate superior sensitivity to linguistic cohesion compared to their Persian-speaking monolingual peers. Furthermore, it addresses the role of gender as a moderating variable in the mastery of these cohesive mechanisms. Methods and Data: The study employed a comparative research design, recruiting 90 participants (aged 15–17) from high schools in the Fars province, Iran. Participants were classified into four distinct cohorts: Persian monolingual males, Persian monolingual females, Arabic–Persian bilingual males, and Arabic–Persian bilingual females. All subjects were assessed at an “intermediate” proficiency level using the Oxford Placement Test. Data collection involved a specialized 30-item substitution test designed to measure the ability to identify and utilize substitution as a cohesive device. Statistical analysis was performed using independent sample ttt-tests to evaluate significant differences between the cohorts. Findings: The empirical analysis yielded several significant results: Bilingual Superiority: Arabic–Persian bilinguals significantly outperformed Persian monolinguals in their grasp of substitution, confirming that bilingualism enhances discourse-level competence in a third language (L3). Consequently, the null hypothesis was rejected. Gender Dynamics in Monolinguals: A significant disparity was observed within the monolingual group, where female learners demonstrated markedly higher proficiency in substitution compared to their male counterparts. Bilingual Stability: Conversely, within the bilingual cohorts, no statistically significant difference was found between genders, suggesting that the cognitive and linguistic advantages conferred by bilingualism may supersede gender-based performance gaps in this specific metalinguistic task. Discussion and Conclusion: The findings corroborate existing scholarship (e.g., Bialystok, 2001) indicating that bilingualism provides a robust foundation for linguistic manipulation and cognitive flexibility. The study concludes that bilingualism fosters an enhanced sensitivity to linguistic cohesion, which is critical for achieving discourse competence. These results offer significant pedagogical implications: educators and curriculum designers should acknowledge the distinct linguistic profiles of bilingual students to optimize their L3 learning trajectories. Future research is encouraged to investigate a broader range of cohesive devices and larger sample sizes to further elucidate the interplay between sociocultural backgrounds and metalinguistic awareness. | ||
